Christian Prayers Before Workout or Exercise

The hardest part of any workout isn’t the last mile or the heaviest lift; it is the first step. It is that moment when you are staring at your running shoes, fighting the urge to stay on the couch.

It is the mental battle where you feel tired, unmotivated, or insecure before you even begin.

We often think God only cares about our “spiritual” time, like church or Bible study. But He cares about your physical body, too. He created it. He designed your muscles to move, your heart to pump, and your lungs to expand.

Inviting God into your workout changes everything. It shifts your focus from vanity (“I want to look good”) to stewardship (“I want to take care of this gift”).

It turns a gym session into an act of worship. When you feel weak, He is your strength. When you feel lazy, He is your motivation.

Before you start moving, anchor your heart in these truths:

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”Philippians 4:13

“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”1 Corinthians 10:31

Here are prayers to get your mind right before you get your body moving.

Prayers to Start Strong

1. The “I Don’t Want to Do This” Prayer

“Lord, to be honest, I have zero motivation right now. I am tired and I would rather be anywhere else. But I know this is good for me. Please give me the nudge I need. Ignite a fire in me. I am asking for Your strength because my own is running low. Help me to take the first step, trusting that You will help me with the rest. Let’s do this together. Amen.”

2. A Prayer for Endurance

“Father, I know this is going to be hard. I know I am going to want to quit when it starts to burn. I ask You for endurance. When my body says ‘stop,’ help my spirit say ‘keep going.’ Remind me that I am capable of more than I think because Your Spirit lives in me. Help me to push through the discomfort and finish strong. Amen.”

3. A Prayer for Safety and Protection

“God, I ask for Your covering over me while I exercise. Protect my muscles, my joints, and my heart. Keep me safe from injury or accidents. Help me to listen to my body and know my limits. I trust You to keep me safe as I move. Amen.”

4. A Prayer for a Healthy Mindset

“Lord, as I look in the mirror, silence the critic in my head. Help me not to work out because I hate my body, but because I love it and want to care for it. Remove the spirit of comparison. Let me focus on my progress and my health. Thank You for a body that can move. I dedicate this time to You. Amen.”

5. A Prayer for Focus

“Jesus, clear my mind. There are a hundred things worrying me right now—work, family, bills. But for the next hour, help me to put those down. Let this be a time of release. Let me focus on the movement and the breath. I cast my cares on You so I can run this race with a light heart. Amen.”

6. The “Dedication” Prayer

“God, You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that I ask or think. I dedicate this sweat to You. Let this workout make me stronger, not just for myself, but so I can serve You better. Give me the energy to love people well and the vitality to fulfill the calling You have on my life. I offer this effort as worship. Amen.”

7. A Short Prayer (While Lacing Up Your Shoes)

“Lord, You are my strength and my shield. I am lacing up these shoes in Your name. Fill me with energy. Let’s go. Amen.”
