Let’s be honest. When we stand at the altar and say “for better or for worse,” none of us truly knows what “worse” looks like until it knocks on the door.
In Christian circles, we often feel like we have to hide the struggle. We smile at church, we hold hands during prayer, but in the car ride home, the silence is deafening. Or worse, the arguments are constant.
You have questions—inner questions that keep you up at night. Why is this happening? Where is God? Why do I feel so distant from the person I promised to love?
The Bible does not promise us a life without storms. Jesus was very clear:
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” — John 16:33
Tribulation is real. But so is the Overcomer.
My name is Olalekan Adebumiti, and I am not writing this from a place of theory. I am writing this from the experiences of the trenches. Between 2021 and 2024, my family walked through the valley of the shadow of death.
I spent time in the ICU with complications from chickenpox. My wife lost her job. We watched our daughter lose an eye to cancer. We wept together when my wife lost a pregnancy mid-term. My business went totally down, and we stood on the verge of being deported.
Any one of those things is enough to break a person. All of them together are enough to shatter a marriage.
But here is the hope: We have a Father who sees beyond the struggle. He sees the wrongs, the hurts, the tiredness, and the fear. And He is the God who can do exceedingly and abundantly above all that we ask or think, even when our marriage feels like it is hanging by a thread.
We often don’t know what to pray when the pain is this loud, and sometimes our struggles are so unique there’s no specific prayer booklet or psalm we could hold on to.
If you are fighting for your marriage today, here are prayers to cover some angles.
Prayers for the Marriage in the Fire
1. A Prayer for Revelation (What is really fighting us?)
Why Pray for Revelation?
We often waste our energy fighting the wrong enemy. We think the problem is the dirty dishes, the tone of voice, or the lack of time.
But usually, the root cause is hidden. It could be a spiritual attack, unhealed trauma, or deep-seated fear. You cannot fix a problem you cannot see.
This prayer is about asking God to turn on the lights so you stop fighting your spouse and start fighting the real issue together:
“Father, we are fighting each other, but I know our spouse is not the enemy. There is chaos in our home, and we are confused. Please open our eyes. Reveal the root cause of this struggle. Is it spiritual attack? Is it stress? Is it unhealed trauma? Shine Your light into the dark corners of our marriage. Show us what we are really fighting so we can stop fighting each other and start fighting the problem together. Amen.”
2. A Prayer for Mercy and Forgiveness
Why Pray for Mercy?
One of the prayers you can hardly pray wrong is the prayer of mercy. It is a multiple-edged sword that works on all sides.
It is sobering, it humbles us, and it touches the heart of God.
It says, “Lord, even if I am not qualified, and even if I have messed up, I know You as a God of mercy.”
When you ask for mercy, you aren’t asking for what you deserve; you are asking for what He gives freely. It softens the hardest of hearts:
“Lord, stress has made us sharp with our tongues and hard with our hearts. We have said things we can’t take back. We have hurt each other out of our own pain. I ask for Your mercy. Forgive us for turning against one another. Soften my heart toward my spouse. Help me to forgive them as You have forgiven me. Wash our marriage clean from bitterness and resentment. Let mercy flow through this house again. Amen.”
3. A Prayer for Strength in the Storm
Why Pray for Strength?
Human willpower has a battery life. You can only “try harder” or “be patient” for so long before you snap—especially when you are dealing with job loss or illness.
We often give up on our marriage simply because we are tired. This prayer acknowledges that you have reached the end of your natural rope and you need a supernatural second wind.
It is asking God to hold you up when you are too weak to stand:
“God, the waves are too high. Between the financial pressure, the health struggles, and the grief, we are drowning. We have nothing left to give each other. We need Your strength. Hold our marriage together when we are too weak to hold on. Be the third strand in this cord that cannot be broken. When the world tries to pull us apart, pull us tighter to You and to each other. Amen.”
4. A Prayer for the Restoration of Love
Why Pray for the Restoration of Love?
When you are in survival mode, love gets buried under stress. You stop seeing your spouse as your lover and friend, and you start seeing them as just another person demanding something from you.
The spark doesn’t always come back on its own; sometimes, it needs to be reignited by the Creator of love.
This prayer is about asking God to dig through the debris of your struggles and unearth the affection that is still there:
“Father, I confess that right now, I don’t feel the love I used to feel. The spark is buried under piles of worry. But I know that love is a choice, not just a feeling. Rekindle the fire. Remind us why we chose each other. Restore the tenderness, the laughter, and the friendship. You are the God of resurrection; please resurrect the joy in this marriage. Amen.”
5. A Prayer for Provision and Peace
Why Pray for Provision and Peace?
We cannot pretend that practical problems don’t affect spiritual unions. When the bank account is empty or health is failing, the tension in the home skyrockets.
External chaos creates internal conflict. We pray this because God is interested in the bills, the job, and the medical report.
By asking Him to handle the external storms, we create a calm environment where the marriage can actually heal:
“Lord, the external pressures—the bills, the jobs, the uncertainty—are crushing our internal peace. You are Jehovah Jireh, our Provider. I ask You to step into our situation. Heal our finances. Heal our bodies. Rebuke the devourer for our sakes. Calm the storm around us so we can find peace within us. We cast these heavy burdens on You. Amen.”
6. A Prayer Against the Spirit of Division
Why Pray Against Division?
Make no mistake: marriage is a covenant, and there is an enemy who hates it. There is a spiritual force that wants you isolated, bitter, and divorced.
This is not just a disagreement; it is spiritual warfare. This prayer is about drawing a line in the sand.
It is taking authority over the influence that is whispering lies into your ear and trying to tear your home apart:
“In the name of Jesus, I stand against every spirit of division, separation, and divorce that is attacking my home. I declare that what God has joined together, let no man—and no circumstance—put asunder. I plead the blood of Jesus over our covenant. We will not be a statistic. We will be a testimony. Amen.”
7. A Prayer of Total Surrender
Why Pray for Total Surrender?
This is the hardest prayer to pray, but it is the most powerful. As humans, we want to control the outcome. We want to force our spouse to change. But control often strangles a marriage. Surrender releases it.
When you surrender, you are taking your hands off the wheel and saying, “God, I can’t fix him/her. I can’t fix this situation. I am giving it all to You.”
That is usually when God finally has the room to work.
“God, You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that I ask or think. I cannot fix this marriage on my own. I surrender my spouse to You. I surrender my pain to You. I surrender the outcome to You. Take the broken pieces of our lives and make something beautiful. I trust You to rewrite our story. Amen.”
The Anchor Holds
If you are reading this and your tears are falling, know that you are not alone. God has not abandoned your home.
It is okay to be not okay.
But it is not okay to give up on the God who can heal you. My family is a testament that the fire does not have to burn you up; it can refine you.
Keep praying. Keep holding on. The God of the breakthrough is on His way.
